Maui Surf Report for February 7th, 2012

The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Warning for the north facing shores of Maui effective through 6pm Thursday evening. The large west-northwest to northwest swell will continue today at or just below advisory levels today along our north and northwest facing shores and some of the more westerly exposed breaks could still pick up some action as well. Another larger and quite dangerous west-northwest to northwest swell is expected to reach Hawai`i overnight tonight and should move down the island chain to reach Maui later Wednesday morning. Large surf from this episode is very likely to arrive before the main swell hits our shores though, so use your better judgment before paddling out and know when it's time to paddle in. Be aware that this will not be a swell that mere mortals should attempt. Strong winds and non-stop sets will create crazy surf conditions and very strong currents. North and northwest facing shores should see surf in the 8-12++ foot range today and could see larger surf by the end of the day. Surf heights will likely reach well over 20 foot Wednesday. Upper West shores may see surf in the 4-6+ foot range today, but Moloka`i will block much of this energy. There is no windswell to mention along our east and northeast facing shores at 1-3++ foot but some breaks could pull in wrapping surf ...

Maui Surf Report for February 6th, 2012

The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory for Maui's north facing shores effective through 6am Tuesday morning due to an incoming northwest swell expected to arrive later today and peak overnight into Tuesday. A much larger swell is expected to arrive later Tuesday into Wednesday that should raise the warning flags. This swell will have some west-northwest component to it as well, so those who know where to look and are lucky could score some good surf. The bad news is that this swell will be very large and dangerous with a mix of short and medium wavelengths due to the close proximity of its source. The threat of poor weather and strong kona winds won't help either. Be smart before paddling out. Although some north shore breaks could pick up some energy from a minor west-northwest swell this morning, most breaks will stay rather small until a new northwest swell arrives later in the day. North and northwest facing shores may offer surf around 3-5 foot this morning and afternoon, but could rapidly rise into the 8-12+ foot range before sunset this evening, peaking overnight and still offering some fun surf Tuesday morning. Upper West shores may offer small surf around 1-3 foot this morning but could also rise later in the day to 4-6+ foot. South facing shores have no swell to mention and will stay ...

Maui Surf Report for February 5th, 2012

Some north shore breaks could still see chest to head-high surf rolling through but most areas will see smaller surf as we wait for our next advisory level swell to arrive Monday. Leftover surf from the north-northwest to north will persist at smaller levels and we may be able to pick up a little west-northwest swell later in the day today. The next swell is expected to reach Maui at some point Monday, likely rising to advisory levels with a combination of west-northwest and northwest energy holding through Tuesday. A much larger northwest swell is expected to arrive Wednesday that should reach warning levels. The bad news is that the source of this swell will reach very near the islands which should result in very large and dangerous surf of widely varying wavelengths as well as strong kona winds. This will not be a good swell to surf, but the winds should produce spectacular feathers blowing off the tops of monster surf. North and northwest facing shores should still have surf in the 3-5 foot range today, and some areas may still pull in some overhead sets. Upper West shores probably won't see much more than 1-3 foot. South facing shores will again stay quite tiny at 0-3 foot but a minor south-southwest swell will still try to sneak in a couple tiny waves. Windswell along the east and northeast facing ...

Maui Surf Report for February 4th, 2012

The surf will fade to small levels today along our north shores but there should still be some fun sets out there, especially with the light winds. Another round of head-high west-northwest swell is expected to arrive Sunday which should keep at least some action going through the weekend before a series of increasingly large northwest swells arrives through the upcoming week. The first of these swells should be able to reach near advisory levels, but will probably fall short here on Maui when it fills in later Monday. A huge swell is expected to arrive late Tuesday into Wednesday, but the close proximity of its source will make it an extremely dangerous and sloppy swell. Plenty more action is expected through the entire forecast period and beyond. North and northwest facing shores may still offer surf in the 3-6 foot range today, depending on where you paddle out. Upper West shores won't do as well, but may still offer surf around 2-4 foot at the better exposed locations. Windswell along the east and northeast facing shores should be rather tiny at only 1-3 foot thanks to small wrapping swell from the northwest. South facing shores will likely stay flat at 0-3 foot but a weak south-southwest swell is trying to offer a ripple or two for bodysurfing or skimming. Maui Surf Report for February 3rd, 2012

The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory effective through 6pm this evening for Maui's north facing shores. A new round of north-northwest swell is expected to fill in today to offer surf at near double-overhead levels at our better exposed breaks. This swell is shorter period than what we've been used to recently, so don't expect as much power. The exceptionally light winds should offer excellent conditions though. This energy should stick around at decent levels Saturday and could still be fun Sunday. Additional reinforcements from the north should ensure a very fun weekend of surf. Next week looks like it's going to be big and nasty as a series of powerful swells reaches Hawai`i beginning Monday with back to back reinforcements expected through the entire week. North and northwest facing shores should offer plenty surf today out of the north-northwest with a little leftover from the west-northwest in the 8-12+ foot range at the best locations, slightly smaller at the lesser exposed breaks. Upper West shores may get in on this action around 3-5+ foot, possibly higher at the best exposed breaks while some areas see near flat conditions. The windswell has dropped to nothing, but some east and northeast facing shores could see some energy wrapping in around the 3-5 foot range, just don't count on it. Get what you can this weekend as next week ...

Maui Surf Report for February 2nd, 2012

The big northwest swell has dropped significantly but the addition of another minor west-northwest swell will still offer head-high surf at most of the better breaks today. A small to moderate north-northwest swell is expected to arrive Friday afternoon that should keep the action going through Saturday when another smaller and weaker pulse arrives out of the north that should maintain the head-high surf into Sunday. A much larger northwest swell is then expected to arrive Monday with the potential to raise the warning flags again, most definitely reaching above advisory levels. It's a little too early for confidence, but the models are hinting toward giant but very dangerous surf later in the week with its source getting very close to the islands. More details to come. North and northwest facing shores should still offer plenty surf today in the 4-6 foot range at the better exposed breaks, and there is still the potential for larger sets at the best breaks. Upper West shores will be smaller at 1-4 foot, and will be shadowed from the newer west-northwest swell. Windswell along our east and northeast facing shores should only be around 2-4 foot, but some spots may pull in small wrapping northwest swell. South facing shores should stay near flat at 0-3 foot but a very minor round of weak south-southwest swell may offer small surf in a few lucky breaks, ...

Maui Surf Report for February 1st, 2012

The warning has been downgraded to a High Surf Advisory that still remains in effect through 6pm this evening for Maui's north facing shores as the large northwest swell continues with wave heights still in the double-overhead range at the better breaks. A new northwest swell is expected to reach Hawai`i overnight Thursday into Friday but probably won't reach Maui until late Friday morning, likely peaking several feet under advisory levels here on Maui while offering larger surf to O`ahu and Kaua`i. Yet another giant northwest is possible for Monday. There will be plenty surf in our future... North and northwest facing shores should continue to see large surf in the 7-10+ foot range at most exposed breaks and a few larger bomb sets are still possible, so keep an eye on the horizon. Upper West shores are mostly small but some areas could see sets in the 3-5+ foot range or higher at the best exposed breaks. Windswell along our east and northeast facing shores will stay tiny but some breaks should pick up wrapping northwest swell around 3-5+ foot. South facing shores will stay near flat at only 0-3 foot with no swell to mention aside from weak background swell. Tweet What's New on OMaui I am experimenting with a long-range forecast chart for both North and South shores which I hope will help people better plan their lives around the surf. ...

Maui Surf Report for January 31st, 2012

The High Surf Warning will remain in effect through 6pm this evening due to a very large northwest swell slamming the Hawaiian islands. This swell will continue to offer big surf along our winter shores today with a little less west-northwesterly component, primarily out of 315°. The surf should still be in the triple-overhead plus range at the best exposed breaks, and some of the outer reefs could see larger sets for the tow-in crews. As always, the inner breaks should see plenty large but more manageable surf, just be aware of the strong currents and chances for sneaker sets. The swell should still have plenty left over Wednesday and most likely won't drop below advisory levels until Thursday. Another round of near advisory swell is anticipated to arrive Thursday night through Friday and there is a lot more to come later in the weekend and likely around the middle of next week. North and northwest facing shores should still see plenty surf in the 10-15+ foot range today, with much larger surf hitting the big wave spots, potentially over 30 foot. Expect consistent surf rolling through with little time to recover between sets. Upper West shores have a better chance today with surf more likely in the 6-10+ foot range, at least at the better exposed breaks, and some areas could see much larger sets if you know where to ...

Maui Surf Report for January 30th, 2012

The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Warning for Maui's north facing shores effective from 6am this morning through 6pm Tuesday evening due to the arrival of a very large west-northwest to northwest swell. The 51101 Northwest Buoy has been indicating a steady increase overnight into this morning and it's still rising as of 6am. It will take some time for this energy to make it down the island chain, so keep your eye on the horizon as we wait for it to appear as it will build to dangerous heights very rapidly. The start of this swell will have some west-northwesterly component in it so be aware that select west exposed breaks could see large and dangerous surf. Use your head and know your limits! North and northwest facing shores should still have head-high plus sets rolling through this morning but the surf will rapidly rise into the 10-15++ foot range at the better breaks. Some outer-reefs could see sets pushing over 20 foot at the peak of this swell. Although the inner breaks will be smaller than that, strong currents and sneaker sets are likely, so be smart before paddling out. Upper West shores may not see much at the beginning of this swell due to Moloka`i swell shadowing, but some breaks could see surf in the 6-10+ foot range. Most south facing shores should stay tiny ...

Maui Surf Report for January 29th, 2012

The High Surf Advisory remains in effect through 6pm this evening as a large northwest swell continues to pound Maui's north facing shores. This energy is expected to drop through the day but will still offer large surf, especially through the morning and early afternoon. The 51101 Northwest Buoy has seen a significant and steady drop through the night into this morning, so get it while it's here. The next swell on the horizon is on its way and it should be quite large when it arrives Monday, potentially reaching warning levels. North and northwest facing shores should still offer plenty surf today in the 7-10+ foot range but the swell is on the way down. At least head high surf should stick around through Monday until the next swell arrives later tomorrow. Upper West shores should also still see good surf today in the 4-6+ foot range, and some of the better exposed breaks could see larger sets. Windswell along our east and northeast facing shores will likely stay small at 2-4+ foot, but those breaks that are exposed to the northwest swell could see larger sets. South facing shores will stay flat to small at 0-3 foot. Tweet What's New on OMaui I am experimenting with a long-range forecast chart for both North and South shores which I hope will help people better plan their lives around the surf.
